01.03.09 | California tour postponed Hello friends,
Unfortunately due to some scheduling complications and some funding issues with Berklee, the tour in california has been postponed (perhaps cancelled entirely). Some members of the group will be performing at a few venues, but I unfortunately will not be able to be a part of most of them, as I will be performing in the Panama Jazz Festival in a week or so. However as every door closes another opens and I have more travel plans ahead.
Last summer good friend and phenomenal guitarist Jeff Miles won the 2008 Montreux Gibson Jazz Guitar Competition and as a reward he's given (among many other things) 5 days in a fantastic studio in Zurich. I'm honored to say that he's asked me to record on his project and I'll be flying out in February to do so. Very exciting!
I have to keep this post short, but I'll fill you all in when I return from Panama on how that went, and hopefully I'll have some great photos, video, audio and stories to share!
Thanks,
Julian
11.10.08 | Updates for your health! Well as some of you may have noticed by glancing at the itinerary page, I will be playing at the Panama Jazz Festival this January. Obviously it is a huge honor to be performing along side such legends (and personal heros) as Wayne Shorter, Danilo Perez, Chucho Valdez, Brian Blade, and all the other phenomenal musicians who will be there. The group I'll be playing with is a sort of collective lead by Panamanian tenor player Jahaziel Arrocha and will feature original music from all of us and some other mutually loved tunes. Shinichiro Sakaino (the one and only) will lay it down on bass and Jon Pinson will be killin it on drums. Should be a really fun week!
In other news, the California gigs are sort of up in the air at the moment, so I apologize in advance to my friends if I don't make it out there as planned. Fingers crossed. However we did play Smalls in NYC last weekend and it was a remarkable experience. We managed to pull in a packed house for both sets despite not really having a chance to promote the show which was really amazing. It's great that jazz can still have a steady audience (at least in NY!). So thanks to all of you who I didn't know who came out to support us!
As always, keep in touch and thanks for checking out the site!

09.06.08 | New Semester, New Gigs Hey Everybody,
With the new semester starting I should actually have more time to keep this place updated. I've been working with a few bands recently, most notably the Outlaw Collective, lead by drummer Cameron Outlaw (linked on my link page) which has been a lot of fun. For my friends out on the west coast, I'm finally set to play several shows out there with the OC in from January 9th through the 20th, so I look forward to seeing you all when I'm rolling through. We should be playing in SD, LA, Santa Cruz and elsewhere so check the itinerary if you've got a second. I have a few dates up now and will continue to update them as they come. I also should be playing several more out there a bit later on in the year with Jesse Scheinin's group (also linked) which has been an extraordinarily inspiring experience for me, so keep an eye out for those. They're both absolutely phenomenal groups.
As for recent endeavors, I just played with the Francisco Pais group (linked) which is was a veritable all-star group of Boston area musicians with myself thrown in for some reason. It was really fantastic and I encourage all of you to check out his music, it's really beautiful.
And as far as my own projects go, I'm in the midst of planning a recording in the spring with some of my favorite musicians so that's an interesting (and daunting) experience to say the least. I'm going to be mainly gigging around in Boston with my own group for now, but hopefully we'll begin to travel soon.
Anyway, thanks for checking the site and I'll try to keep updating as much as I can!
Julian
